Road Trip

From: RachelS (prazehm878@yahoo.com) | Date: 2010-03-27 15:16:31 UTC
My grandfather is not doing well, so I am about to make a very quick trip from Dallas TX to Virginia Beach VA to visit him. It is about a 20 hour drive, and I am not wanting to make the trip any longer than it already is, but yet still get in a little letterboxing along the way. I, of course, have done the Trip Planner search on atlasquest, but thought some of you may have suggestions for some VERY QUICK DRIVE BY's that would be along the way. The roads I am taking:

I 30 from Dallas TX to Little Rock AR
I 40 from Little Rock AR to Eastern Tennessee
I 81 from Eastern Tennessee to Staunton, VA
I 64 from Staunton, VA to Virginia Beach VA

Thanks!

Knoxville, TN in particular has so many lb's to choose from that it's overwhelming trying to figure out which one would be the best (time-wise). I am looking for boxes that are quick to get to (think a rest area along the way, or something right on the service road), and that don't involve a lot of walking.

Under normal circumstances I love a great hike, but it's just not possible for this trip.

Thanks!

Elwood Fan

Hi - so sorry to hear about your grandfather. I hope he recovers soon!
We're in Central VA, so here's what we can offer -
From what we can remember (it's been a while since we found these
boxes) nothing in Richmond will fit your need for drive by + quick on
and off I-64.
We have a box at the New Kent County, VA rest area that won't help you
on your way out, but is a quick leg-stretcher on your way back west.
http://www.atlasquest.com/boxes/clue/index.html?gBoxId=77943 If you get
a message that the box is not available, email privately and I'll send
you the clues.
If you have down time once you're in VA Beach, just search around your
location - there are lots and lots of quality drive bys by some talented
carvers.
Good luck!

Hey EllBee, we have the opposite request - we're looking for recommendations
for challenging hikes with letterboxes in the Richmond area (anywhere within
~100 miles or so). We're doing clue research at the moment, but if you or
anyone else can make specific recommendations, we'd love to hear them.

The biggest problem with Richmond is that many of the boxes were planted
back in 2000-02 by folks who are long gone and the boxes are not
maintained, or are maintained through the kindness of random boxers.
Also, the terrain is such that there aren't really any "challenging"
hikes - the more difficult ones only rise to the level of urban mountain
biking courses. The most fun of those is the old Clue series, planted in
4 different Richmond area parks - these are listed on LbNA. I have no
idea how active they still are, but the series is a fun example of an
early collaborative effort between boxers to bring stamps by many
different carvers to a box-challenged area. We enjoyed hunting them for
the fun of finding (for this area) historic boxes. Unfortunately, after
the retirement of the early boxers Richmond has seen a lot of
one-and-done type boxers, so lots of drive-bys or short hikes with store
bought stamps. Can you tell we do most of our boxing while traveling? ;->

Virginia Beach - again not exactly challenging hikes as the land is so
flat, but if you add up all the boxes in First Landing State Park it at
least comes to an impressive mileage... ;->

We're mostly flatland hikers except over short distances, so can't help
you with the mountains. I do know that Koyote and Bulldawg planted some
boxes on 10-15 mile hikes, but that was a while back and you may have
already snagged them.

Sorry I can't help more,
EllBee

Thanks for the info! We may do some of those on our last day when we need
to be closer to the airport. We do like to find the older boxes (found one
in Phoenix at the end of December that was planted on 1-JAN-2000!)

However we'll probably head west to the hillier areas for most of our trip.

You could always come to El Norte. ;-)

Maybe the Dawg has some suggestions for hikes that are Wisconsin Worthy.

I know it is your box, but I thought it is in the east bound rest area?

Nope, west-bound for sure. It's easy to tell, because it's part of our
VA Welcome Center series and it's at the East Coast Gateway Welcome
Center, welcoming visitors entering the state from the Eastern Shore and
the ports in Norfolk. I'm not even sure there is an east-bound rest area.

No, that visitor center is definitely on the east bound side of the
highway. We often stop there on the way to Busch Gardens (though not
last weekend). There is a rest area on the west bound side, but it is a
standard rest area. The welcome center offers information on the
Tidewater area.

Here is the VDOT web page for the welcome center:

Not sure what to say really. So there is an EB rest area, but our box is
at the WB welcome center. It's been found there, we've checked on it
there. It's not really worth all this discussion, but I guess it at
least means *something* is being posted, even if it's not substantive. ;->

PS: Shall we start a fight about it? Then it'll really be like old
times! :-D

"Prospectin'..." is definitely on the Westbound side. I nabbed it back in 2008 on the way home from Va. Beach
